Head Lice Treatments

Time for a head lice treatment , and fast! Why?

Schools have a “no nits” policy that can make it difficult for your child to return to school. Finding an effective treatment for lice and nits is important for returning your family life to normal.

“No Nits” is the policy that many schools have adopted when dealing with head lice infestations.

In order to understand this school policy, it’s important to understand what nits are, how they work, as well as how to get rid of them.

Lice are human parasites. They are very small and difficult to see, especially when they’re in a full head of hair. Lice feed on human blood. Lice don’t carry diseases and they’re not harmful, but they can be very annoying. When they bite the scalp, they can irritate it, causing itching. Often these bitten areas can develop red bumps or infections.

Baby lice are called “nits”. These nits look like little brown or yellow dots before they are hatched.

When they hatch, the shells are white or clear and they remain attached to the hair shaft. Nits look a lot like dandruff, but they cannot be brushed off the hair. Nits need to be pulled off from the hair shaft in order to completely rid the scalp of them. Often, parents will see nits on their child’s hair and not actual lice. Nits take between one to two weeks to hatch into lice.

Because nits stick tight to the hair shafts, they are very difficult to get rid of.

Combing through the hair with a nit comb is a slow and laborious process, but it can be slightly effective in removing the nits. Often this combing process needs to be repeated again and again to be fully effective.

Schools often have policies dictating when children who have been infected with lice can return to school.  According to some of these policies, only children who have been treated with pesticides and who have no visible nits can return to school. This is often a frustrating policy for an already overwhelmed parent.

Ridding your child of lice should ensure that your child is no longer contagious.

Not all nits will hatch and develop into lice. It is impossible to predict which nits will hatch and which are simply egg casings. Many experts believe a “No Nits” policy is overkill in a school setting because of this. And yet these policies remain in place.

Searching for an effective lice treatment can be time consuming and difficult. Over the counter medications are most often ineffective and potentially harmful to your child. Ridding your home of lice is exhausting.  A “No Nits” policy can further disrupt family life by causing children to miss more school and for parents to have to take time off work in order to stay home with their children. The whole process can be very time consuming and frustrating.

While well intentioned, a “No Nits” policy is overkill for a problem that can be solve…
